Designed in the 1890s by John Browning to represent a step forward from existing revolvers at that time. The project was continued by Colt Industries, and after rigorous tests, the project was approved. In 1911, it was introduced into the standard equipment of the American army. The pistol was revised in 1924, with slight modifications to its exterior. Since then, it has remained unchanged. After a century of use worldwide, the Colt 1911 remains the most important pistol in human history.
